50 home remedies to relieve heartburn without medications

Heartburn is something that most of us will experience at least once in awhile. It's that uncomfortable burning sensation right in the middle of the chest that's caused when acid from your stomach goes back up your esophagus. If that's not bad enough, it's even worse when you throat starts to burn and you can almost taste the acid. Yuck!

Unfortunately my husband gets it a lot! He's tried everything to relieve his heartburn over the years. Antacids, different prescriptions, changing his diet etc etc. Some help for awhile, but they all end up failing eventually. It's been getting worse over the last 4 or 5 years so we've turned to natural cures to help. Luckily there are so many home remedies for heartburn relief! I've found over 50 different ways to relieve heartburn without medications. Hopefully some of these will work for you too!

how to get rid of heartburn

He's tried everything from sleeping on his left side to eating mustard off a spoon. (ewww) Some of these home remedies have worked really well and others not at all. However, all of these ideas were either found in a health publication, recommended by the doctor or volunteered by someone who said it worked for them.

As with any natural remedy...your results may vary! Some of them are so simple though that they're definitely worth a try.

17) Aloe Vera juice
18) Activated charcoal
19) Apple Cider Vinegar with 'the mother'. I Tbs ACV in a glass of water
20) 1 teaspoon baking soda in 8 oz water

These might sound weird but they actually work:
21) Yellow mustard. Eat a spoon of it, plain.
22) Lemon juice, 1 Tbsp mixed in a glass of water
23) Lime juice, 2 tsp in a glass of water
24) Sip pickle juice.

    What the Dr Advised:
48) Chewing mint gum (sugar free) after a meal
49) Sleeping on your left side
50) Cut out trigger foods, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

Determining what your heartburn triggers are and eliminating them can really help reduce your bouts with it.

Obviously there's a lot you can do to control heartburn naturally. The contents of your stomach are supposed to be acidic, which is why antacids are not really a solution. Acid reflux is often caused by too little acid, not too much. This explains why things like lemon juice or apple cider vinegar sound like they would make it worse, but they actually make it better.

The great part about this list is that many of these items are in your home right now or easily accessible when you're out. They're also fairly common dietary items (mostly) so they shouldn't cause a problem if they don't happen to work for you. Many of them did work for us though, so it's worth a shot.

  2. I swear by Peppermint for heartburn, which is kind of weird because you'd think it would have the opposite effect. Thanks for this list. (I have heartburn way more than I'd like to!) #happynowlinkup

  4. While I know that it doesn't really help in the long term, the only thing that helped my pregnancy heartburn was drinking milk over ice. Totally weird, right? I wish I would have known about some of these then, I might have asked my doctor if I could try them! Thanks for joining us at the #happynowlinkup!

  7. Wow! I had no idea there are so many natural ways to help! This is perfect for me as I help my husband overcome his often-occurring heartburn. I'd like to know more about combining peppermint, parsley, and ginger into one tea remedy, and if they have a synergistic effect that is greater than the sum of the three. Any ideas?

    1. I'm not sure about the three together but I have had peppermint and ginger tea at the same time and it worked well. I don't know that it worked any faster/better because the 2 were together, but it would be fun to experiment to find out!
